Oopbuy budget spreadsheet

Quick answer: Cheap finds on Taobao and Weidian really are cheap, but on a budget haul shipping can cost more than the items. The way to keep it cheap is to batch: collect several light items over a few weeks and ship them together, because shipping prices drop per kilo after the first weight step. Add a shipping coupon, skip heavy and bulky items, and work out the cost per item, not the price per item.

Cheap items, and the bill that comes after

The budget section of any spreadsheet is full of items that cost less than a lunch: t-shirts, socks, caps, phone cases, jewellery. Oopbuy charges no purchasing fee on Taobao, Tmall, 1688 and JD orders, so the price you see is close to what you pay for the item. The catch arrives later. International shipping is paid separately when items reach the warehouse, and on a budget haul it can easily cost more than everything inside the parcel.

That doesn't make budget hauls a bad idea. It means the number to watch is the cost per item after shipping, not the price tag. The grid above shows current low-priced finds; the rest of this page is about keeping them cheap all the way to your door.

On a budget haul, shipping decides whether it was cheap.

The maths: cost per item, not price per item

Most shipping lines charge a price for the first weight step and a lower price for each step after it. A single light item pays the whole first step on its own; several items share it. Here is the shape of it with round, made-up numbers. They are not Oopbuy's rates, which vary by line and country.

ParcelItems costShipping (illustrative)TotalCost per item
1 t-shirt (0.3 kg)$6$18$24$24
5 t-shirts (1.5 kg)$30$30$60$12
10 light items (2.5 kg)$60$40$100$10

The pattern holds whatever the real rates are: adding light items to a parcel raises the total slowly and lowers the cost per item quickly. That is why Oopbuy's 90 days of free storage matter for budget buyers, and why waiting two or three weeks before shipping is usually the cheapest decision you can make. They give you time to collect enough items to make one parcel worthwhile. Get real figures for your country with the shipping calculator.

Never ship one cheap item alone; let a few weeks of finds share the first weight step.

Six ways to keep a budget haul cheap

  1. Batch. Collect light items over a few weeks and ship them together.
  2. Stay light and flat. T-shirts, socks, accessories and jewellery are ideal. Shoes, boots and puffer jackets eat a budget parcel.
  3. Remove boxes and ask for compact packing. Volume costs money on many lines.
  4. Use a shipping coupon. New accounts get a shipping coupon pack, and events add more; see the coupon guide.
  5. Choose the line for this parcel. A tax-inclusive economy line is usually cheapest overall for a light parcel to the EU. Express rarely makes sense for cheap items.
  6. Avoid returns. Check the size chart before buying and spend ¥1 on a measurement photo instead of paying to send an item back.

Light items, one parcel and one coupon make most budget hauls work.

Watch out for these budget traps

1688 minimum quantities

1688 is Alibaba's wholesale platform, and its prices can look unbeatable. Many listings set a minimum order quantity, or show a low price that applies only to bulk tiers. Before ordering, check that the listing lets you buy one piece and what that single piece costs.

Returns that cost more than the item

You have 5 days from storage to request a return or exchange, but returns aren't free. The seller may charge return shipping, and guides describing Oopbuy's terms mention a small processing fee once any free attempts are used. On a $5 item, that can wipe out the purchase. For cheap items, it is usually better to keep a near-miss than to return it, which makes the size check before buying more important.

The per-parcel fee

Oopbuy charges a customs declaration fee of about ¥8 per parcel. It is small, but it applies to every parcel, which is one more reason to send one parcel instead of three.

Customs on the total

VAT applies to the goods in every parcel on most lines, unless the line includes it. Since 1 July 2026 the EU also charges a flat customs duty of €3 per item on parcels worth up to €150, and normal duty rates above that. On a budget haul of many cheap items, that per-item charge adds up, so count it in the cost per item.

Check minimums on 1688, size carefully to avoid returns, and keep parcels few.

QC on a budget

Cheap items come with more variation in quality, which makes the warehouse photos more important, not less. Standard QC photos are free, and extra photos cost ¥1. For a cheap t-shirt, a photo of the print and the label is enough. For a cheap bag or jewellery, ask for a close-up of the hardware. The QC guide has a five-minute checklist.

One more budget habit: when the photos show a near-miss on a very cheap item, such as a slightly different shade, weigh the return cost against simply keeping it. The money is usually better spent on the next parcel.

QC is the cheapest insurance in a budget haul.

Where to go next

Mix budget finds with other categories to fill a parcel: women's finds and accessories are light, shoes are heavy, so plan accordingly. For all categories, see Oopbuy links, and for the full cost of an order, the Oopbuy spreadsheet.

FAQ

Is the Oopbuy spreadsheet cheap?

The items often are. Whether the haul is cheap depends on shipping, which you pay separately once items reach the warehouse. Light items shipped together keep the cost per item low.

How do I make an Oopbuy haul cheaper?

Batch light items into one parcel, remove boxes, use a shipping coupon, pick a line that suits the parcel's weight and size, and avoid returns by checking sizes before buying.

Why is my cheap item expensive to ship?

Shipping lines charge a minimum first-weight price. A single light item pays that whole first step on its own. Several items share it.

Are 1688 items cheaper?

Often, because 1688 is a wholesale platform. Many listings set a minimum order quantity or price tiers for bulk buyers, so check that you can buy one piece before ordering.

Is it worth returning a cheap item?

Often not. Seller return shipping and any processing fee can approach the item's price. Get the size right first, and use extra QC photos at ¥1 to check before shipping.
